Presumably the noise of the FRV pixel shift tool is as free of noise as Sony's, and yet there's something about the sharpening that Sony does that is hard to replicate manually on the pixel-shift DNGs produced by FRVs tool. If you use 8 images, even better.įred I was talking about using the output of the FRV pixel Shift tool, and then applying aggresive sharpening, and comparing it to the output of Sony's pixel shift tool (which as we know comes aggressively sharpened) You can keep the originals is Lightroom as per normal, then point digger at the directory the files are in, save the output there, the synchronize that folder in LR to bring the dng into the catalogue.ĭid you try 'Mean' averaging 4 images without pixel shift? You get the same improvement in random noise which also allows for more aggressive sharpening. Perhaps Sony knows something about their own files which allows more aggressive sharpening without artifacts? I can’t replicate the same effect without atfefacts in any tool I use (including various kinds of deconvolution) starting with the output of the new pixel shift software. #Libraw rawdigger softwareIt’s probably true that most of the improvement we see from pixel shif in the Sony software is down to sharpening.īUT it’s pretty impressive sharpening. The latter, however, can be also accomplished without pixel shift by utilizing multi-shot image averaging. Pixel shift is an amazing technique removing false color such as moire and reducing random noise. Having said all that, it seems to be an outstanding feature for still-life where lighting is constant, subject does perfectly still and where moire is present. The RawDigger beta did a much better job in handling movement in the clouds between the four shots. Here is a photo from Tuesday using the RawDigger program to generate a DNG file which I then processed in LR/PS. Much prefer the RawDigger beta program to the Sony software. Saw the RawDigger beta yesterday and tried it out. I did some landscaping with pixel shift on Tuesday. Will the new software allow individual files of the pixel shift group to be saved separately, so that they could be used to repair "bad" areas of the combined file? This looks to add no sharpening out if the gate Like to see this new composite software and bring it in C1. I’ll try and shoot a new Big Bronco in the morning when I test the 24-105. Now we just need more third party applications to replace the Smooth Reflection App! This is good to see third party applications to take the place of the horrid Sony attempt. The latter, however, can be also accomplished without pixel shift by utilizing a multi-shot 'mean' image averaging. Pixel shift is an amazing technique that avoids false color such as moire and also reduce random noise from averaging. Having said all that, it seems to be an outstanding feature for still-life where lighting is constant, subject remains perfectly still and where moire is present. When that's done, the pixel shift 'resolution' increase is much smaller, although still visible. In that case, the difference will be huge but most fail to realize this comparison is not apples to apples.Every software employs a subjective processing recipe and therefore the resulting images must be compared using the same exact processing. There are a lot of sites comparing pixel shift crops processed using the Sony software (Imaging Edge) vs a single RAW in Lightroom or C1. The delay between shots is too long (1s) which increases the likelihood of lighting changing and movement which can adversely cause ill-effects on the results in the form of artifacts. IMO, the current implementation of pixel shift is not ideal for landscapes. My Sony software is hitting the dirt today No this is the one I want right here it combines the 4 files and outputs a DNG without touching the 4 raw files but just combines them. I'd love it, if not that its actual use is so limited for most things! I've considered the possibilties, and it seems like it's unusable most of the time for situations in which I'd want it. Blog yesterday reference to a new application via RawDigger to process Sony pixel shift images? More to the point, has anyone actually TRIED it yet?
